Café Partner

We’re looking for a business partner to create a zero-waste, farm-to-table café. The café will be a complement to the housing and farm activities on site and it will be open to the public. The café will work with farmer to build a contract garden that grows nutrient dense produce required by cafe all seasons. Supplements from local farms and purveyors encouraged. The café menu should change seasonally, and will operate for breakfast and lunch. The Café Partner will oversee café staff, operations, finances and strategic plan. The cafe will require coordination with the farm both for production and implementation of the site currency, Barn Bucks. 

Here’s a bit of what we're thinking this role might look like:

Café Manager Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on design with project developers and architect; oversee construction of café
  • Oversee year-round kitchen/café operations, including team management, scheduling, menu planning, food preparation, inventory, ordering, and equipment maintenance
  • Recruit, train and oversee kitchen staff, apprentices, volunteers and seasonal workers
  • Design zero-waste food strategy in coordination with market garden
  • Develop relationships for marketing launch and ongoing marketing needs
  • Manage site currency and accounting with farmer
  • Develop systems for costing, record keeping, training and communications
  • Develop recipes to maximize use of farm grown produce
  • Oversee culinary product development, including baked goods, fermented and dehydrated foods or beverages and other offerings
  • Maintains inventory, budgets and record keeping for kitchen operations
  • Maintain excellent vendor relations, meets with sales representatives and vendors in order to negotiate prices and order supplies
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Maintain highest professional food quality standards and assures that the kitchen and cafe meet all regulations, including sanitary and safety guidelines as well as accident prevention standards
  • Maintain highest levels of professionalism and courtesy when interacting with other team members, guests, and visitors
  • Actively seek out customer comment and feedback, visit dining area when open to welcome members and guests and share information about the selected menu
  • Meet with customers to discuss menus for special events,  with consideration for any special dietary needs
  • Maintain regular email and phone correspondence
  • Develop and maintains positive relationships with culinary/farm related organizations
  • Assist in the production of promotional materials and actively seek and advise on promotion through appropriate venues

Café Manager Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience running restaurant of similar scale and volume; assume 50-seat, breakfast/lunch service, all season, farm-to-table 
  • Entrepreneurial, creative and hands-on
  • Desire to create haven for health and wellness
  • Able to commit to building new business enterprise
  • Works well with others
  • Experience and knowledge in state and county health compliance standards
  • 3+ industry, culinary, restaurant, kitchen management experience
  • Teaching and demonstration cooking experience
  • Ability to prepare variety of plant-based cuisine styles (vegetarian, vegan, raw, gluten-free, etc.) based on customer preference
  • Experience in menu development, pricing and cooking for groups
  • Ability to manage resources efficiently, track food and labor costs, implement waste reduction systems and engage in creative problem solving
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style
  • Working knowledge of various computer software programs
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting 50 lbs
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred
  • Current Kitchen Manager certification required
